GSTR-3B Advisory Update February 2026

Urgent GST Advisory: New Mandatory Step for GSTR-3B

📅 Effective From: February 2026 Tax Period

📢 Status: Mandatory Interim Procedure

The GSTN has introduced a significant update to the GSTR-3B filing process on the GST Portal. To ensure accurate interest calculations and period-wise reporting, a new validation step has been added to the Payment of Tax page.

What is the New Requirement?

Taxpayers are now required to confirm their "Tax Liability Breakup" before the system allows the final submission of GSTR-3B.

  • The Purpose: This tab captures tax liabilities related to earlier periods (reported in GSTR-1/IFF) that are being discharged in the current month.
  • The Change: The portal now auto-populates this breakup based on the document dates of the supplies you reported.
⚠️ Current Technical Alert: There is a known system issue where the portal requests this confirmation for every taxpayer, even if there is no previous period liability. GSTN is currently working on a fix.

Step-by-Step Guide to File Successfully

  1. Navigate to Payment Page: After offsetting your liability in GSTR-3B, stay on the payment screen.
  2. Access the Tab: Click on the "Tax Liability Breakup, As Applicable" button.
  3. Review & Confirm: Check the auto-populated details. If there is no previous liability, it may appear blank.
  4. Save to Proceed: You MUST click the SAVE button inside this tab.
  5. Final Submission: Once saved, the "Proceed to File" button will activate.

Why This Matters

Under Section 50 of the CGST Act, interest is applicable if you discharge a past period's tax in a later return. This step is designed to automate tracking, providing transparency and reducing manual reconciliation errors.

Pro Tip: Ensure your invoice dates in GSTR-1 are accurate, as the GSTR-3B portal now uses those specific dates to determine which period the tax belongs to.
