How to E-Verify ITR Without Aadhaar OTP

How to E-Verify Income Tax Return Online Without Aadhaar OTP

Filing your Income Tax Return (ITR) is only half the job done. The Income Tax Department will not process your return until you e-verify it. While Aadhaar-based OTP is the most common method, it is not the only option. If your mobile number is not linked to your Aadhaar, or you are facing network issues, you can still e-verify your ITR using several alternate online and offline methods.

The 30-Day Deadline

The Income Tax Department requires you to verify your ITR within 30 days of filing. If you fail to verify it within this window, your return will be treated as invalid (never filed), and you may face late fees or penalties.

4 Ways to E-Verify ITR Online Without Aadhaar OTP

1. Through Net Banking

This is the easiest alternative if you have an active net banking facility with any authorized bank.

  • Step 1: Go to the official e-filing portal (incometax.gov.in).
  • Step 2: Click on the 'e-Verify Return' quick link.
  • Step 3: Enter your PAN, Assessment Year, and Acknowledgement Number.
  • Step 4: Select 'Through Net Banking' as your verification method.
  • Step 5: Choose your bank from the list and click 'Continue'.
  • Step 6: Log into your net banking portal when redirected.
  • Step 7: Locate the 'e-Verify' or 'Income Tax Filing' link (usually under 'Services' or 'Tax' tabs).
  • Step 8: Click it to automatically redirect back to the tax portal with a success message.

2. Through Bank Account (EVC)

You can generate an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) directly using your bank account details.

  • Step 1: Log into the e-filing portal and ensure your bank account is Pre-validated under 'Profile Settings'.
  • Step 2: Ensure your PAN and mobile number match your bank records.
  • Step 3: Go to 'e-Verify Return' and select 'Through Bank Account'.
  • Step 4: An EVC will be sent to your bank-registered mobile number and email.
  • Step 5: Enter this EVC on the tax portal to complete the verification.

3. Through Demat Account

If you invest in the stock market, you can use your pre-validated demat account to complete the process.

  • Step 1: Pre-validate your Demat Account details on the e-filing portal.
  • Step 2: Go to 'e-Verify Return' and select 'Through Demat Account'.
  • Step 3: An EVC will be sent to your registered mobile number and email.
  • Step 4: Enter the code on the portal and click submit.

4. Through Bank ATM

Select major banks (such as SBI, Axis Bank, Canara Bank, IDBI, and Central Bank) allow you to generate a tax EVC through physical ATMs.

  • Step 1: Insert your debit card into your bank's ATM and enter your PIN.
  • Step 2: Select the option 'Generate EVC for Income Tax Filing'.
  • Step 3: The EVC code will be sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Step 4: Log onto the e-filing portal online, choose 'I already have an EVC', enter the code, and submit.

Offline Alternative: Sending Physical ITR-V Form

If none of the online methods work for you, you can still verify your return manually through the post.

  • Download the ITR-V (Acknowledgement) PDF from the e-filing portal.
  • Print the form in black ink on a single page.
  • Sign the physical form using blue ink in the designated box.
  • Send the signed form to the Centralized Processing Center (CPC) Bengaluru via Speed Post or Ordinary Post.
