In a significant development, the Income Tax Department has announced a crucial update by extending the deadline for filing Income Tax Returns.

The CBDT Extends Deadline for Processing Non-Scrutiny Income Tax Returns: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension of the deadline for processing income tax returns filed electronically with refund claims u/s 143(1) of the Income-tax Act, 1961. 

This extension applies to returns filed for Assessment Year 2020-21 and was issued through an order dated January 31, 2024. Originally due on January 31, 2024, the new deadline for processing these returns is now April 30, 2024. The decision aims to address pending taxpayer grievances related to refund issuances. Other provisions of previous orders under section 119 of the Act will remain unchanged.
