The IT Dept Launched an online Challan Correction Feature on the Income Tax Return Portal

The Income Tax Department has added a user-friendly tool to the Income Tax Return (ITR) portal. This will be focused on easing the process of paying income tax payments and fixing any mistakes in the payment process. This tool helps quickly correct errors in income tax payments.

Taxpayers can use this new feature for seven days after they make their income tax payment. After that, they'll have to use the old offline method for corrections.

This online Challan Correction tool works for payments related to Assessment Year (AY) 2020-21 (which corresponds to the Financial Year 2019-20) and later.

So, if you are paying taxes for AY 2020-21 or later, you can fix specific mistakes online. This saves you from having to visit the income tax office in person.

You can use the 'Challan Correction' option to correct three important details in your income tax payment records:

You can use this online feature to correct three important things in your income tax payment records:

1. Assessment Year

2. Major Heads (like code 0021 for income tax for individuals)

3. Minor Heads (like advance tax)

The income tax e-filing website specifies that you can submit correction requests only for minor heads 100 (Advance tax), 300 (self-assessment tax), and 400 (demand payment as regular assessment tax), along with their corresponding major heads, using the e-filing portal.

How to Use Challan Correction Feature on the ITR Portal?

Here's a simple guide to correct your income tax payment details online:

The First step is to log in to the e-filing tax portal.

In the next step click on "Create Challan Correction Request" on the new page that appears.

Thirdy choose the correction you need:

a) Change the assessment year.

b) Change the tax category (Major head).

c) Change the payment type (Minor head).

Then in the fourth step, fill in the necessary details for the income tax challan that needs correction. This could include the assessment year or Challan Identification Number (CIN).

The challan in need of correction has not been used for filing the ITR. There are no outstanding requests for challan corrections.
