Income Tax Processing

The Central Processing Unit (CPC) in Bangalore is in charge of processing the filed income tax returns. All initial assessments are currently handled by the CPC.

The Income Tax Department initiates the processing of income tax returns once they are filed and successfully verified by the taxpayer. It's recommended to submit your ITR on time to ensure quicker processing by the department.

Upon receiving the ITR, the CPC unit of the Income Tax Department begins the processing and subsequently sends an intimation notice, as per Section 143(1), to the registered email address.

This notice confirms the completion of ITR processing and indicates the payable tax amount or the refund owed by the income tax department.

ITR Filing & Verification

Income tax return filing and verification are crucial steps to prevent late fees and penalties. Timely submission of your income tax returns is essential to avoid these charges.

Once you've filed and verified your ITR, whether it's before or after the deadline, the processing of your returns will commence. However, to ensure quicker processing, it's advisable to file your returns promptly.

The Income Tax Processing begins only after your return has been successfully verified. You have the option to either e-verify your ITR or send the ITR-V to CPC, Bangalore, within 30 days from the filing date.

Intimation u/s 143(1) of the Income Tax Act

After verifying the Income Tax Return (ITR), the department initiates its processing and sends an intimation under Section 143(1) of the Income Tax Act, 1961. This intimation, accompanied by a message, is dispatched to the registered email ID and mobile number provided by the taxpayer.

The Central Processing Center (CPC) handles the processing of each e-filed return and generates the intimation under section 143(1). The department cross-references the data furnished in the return by the taxpayer with the records available at the CPC, resulting in the generation of an intimation under section 143(1).

The intimation contains a comprehensive tax calculation based on both the taxpayer's input and the income tax department's records. This complete procedure takes around 20-45 days from the date of e-verification or the receipt of ITR-V by the CPC.

Scenarios After ITR Processing: Taxpayers should understand the implications of the ITR intimation they receive. Below are these three possible scenarios to consider:

Refund Determined: If the filed return is accurate and includes a refund claim, the taxpayer will receive the refund. Usually, this process takes 20-45 days after e-verifying the income tax return. However, if the acknowledgment was sent physically to the CPC, the process might take longer.

Demand Determined: This scenario arises when additional tax needs to be paid. The income tax department sends a demand intimation if there are discrepancies in taxes paid. The taxpayer must settle the demand within the specified timeframe mentioned in the intimation under section 143(1).

No Demand-No Refund: When the department approves the information provided by the taxpayer, the intimation will state 'No demand No refund.' This indicates that the taxpayer neither owes any taxes or interest nor is eligible for a refund.
