ITR-2 Enabled for AY 2026–27: Online Filing & Excel Utility Now Live

The Income Tax Department has officially enabled both the online filing functionality and the Excel Utility for ITR-2 for Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27 on the official Income Tax e-Filing Portal. Taxpayers who earn income from capital gains, multiple house properties, or foreign assets can now prepare and submit their returns early.

Who Needs to File ITR-2?

The ITR-2 form is designated for individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income from profits and gains of a business or profession. You must use this form if your income sources for Financial Year (FY) 2025–26 include:

  • Capital Gains: Profits from selling shares, mutual funds, real estate, or crypto assets.
  • Salary Exceeding ₹50 Lakh: Total salaried income over this threshold.
  • Foreign Assets/Income: Ownership of foreign bank accounts, properties, or financial interests.
  • Multiple House Properties: Income or losses from more than one house property.
  • Other Criteria: Serving as a company director or holding unlisted equity shares.

Key Filing Options: Online vs. Excel Utility

Taxpayers have two ways to prepare and complete their compliance forms:

Feature Online Filing Mode Excel Utility (Offline Mode)
Data Entry Filled directly on the browser. Filled locally using Microsoft Excel.
Pre-filled Data Auto-populates inside the portal. Must be imported via a downloaded JSON file.
Best For Users with straightforward capital gains data. High-volume stock or mutual fund transactions.
Submission Direct validation and instant e-verification. Requires generating and uploading a final JSON file.

Key Updates in ITR-2 for AY 2026–27

The Income Tax Department has streamlined several internal schedules to ease compliance:

  • Capital Gains Realignment: The temporary requirement to bifurcate transactional reporting strictly based on the July 23, 2024 tax rate change window has been removed.
  • Donation Transparency: To claim deductions against specific donations, users must now manually input specific transaction reference numbers within the disclosure schedules.
  • Cleaned Rate Schedules: Outdated transactional classifications under short-term and long-term structures have been removed across all schedules to match current operational tax laws.
