Introduction
The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has significantly improved the biometric authentication process for new GST registration applicants. This new capability now allows select Promoters/Directors to complete their biometric authentication at any GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) in their home state, rather than being limited to a specific GSK. This reform intends to simplify the registration process, increase accessibility, and provide a more seamless experience for firms who register under GST.
Background: Aadhaar Authentication for GST Registration
For new GST registrations, candidates must undertake Aadhaar authentication using either:
- Verification using an OTP or
- Biometric authentication at a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK).
The authentication mechanism is chosen based on system requirements and data analysis. If biometric authentication is required, the applicant will receive an email with a slot booking link.
Previous System: Limitations on GSK Selection
Previously, applicants chosen for biometric authentication were required to visit the jurisdictional GSK allocated to their area. This presented difficulties for Promoters/Directors who lived in a different state than the company's registration jurisdiction, resulting in logistical concerns and delays.
New Feature: Home-State Biometric Authentication Facility
GSTN has recently implemented a more flexible method, allowing some Promoters/Directors to perform their biometric authentication at any GSK in their home state. This capability is applicable to individuals mentioned in the Promoter/Partner page for the following sorts of businesses:
- Public Limited Company
- Private Limited Company
- Unlimited Company
- Foreign Company
Key Advantages of This Enhancement:
- Convenience: Rather than traveling to a jurisdictional GSK, Promoters/Directors can choose a close GSK inside their home state.
- Time-saving: Eliminates unnecessary travel time and simplifies the registration process.
- Improved Compliance: Promotes timely biometric authentication, reducing delays in GST registration approvals.
How Home-State GSK Selection Works
- If the GST registration application is selected for biometric authentication, an email notification is delivered to the applicant.
- Eligible Promoters/Directors would be able to select any GSK in their Home State via email.
- Once a GSK is chosen, it cannot be changed again. As a result, applicants must carefully select their chosen location.
- This capability is now available in 33 states/UTs that have biometric authentication enabled.
- It will soon be expanded to the remaining three states of Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Sikkim.
- Once a GSK has been selected, the Promoter/Director will receive an email confirmation with a new slot booking link.
- The candidate can then reserve a time period that works for them, depending to availability at the preferred GSK.
- The biometric process, which includes photo capture and authentication, will be done at the chosen GSK.
- If a Promoter/Director has already completed the biometric process, they do not need to go through it again.
Important Points to Note
- If the Primary Authorized Signatory (PAS) and Promoter/Director are the same person, they must go to the appropriate jurisdictional GSK to complete the biometric process and document verification.
- To guarantee smooth processing, the PAS should complete biometric authentication before visiting the GSK.
- Choosing a Home-State GSK is optional. Promoters/Directors may still visit their allocated jurisdictional GSK if they like.
Conclusion
GSTN has implemented a new capability that would significantly simplify the GST registration procedure. GSTN has increased the accessibility and efficiency of compliance by allowing Promoters/Directors to choose biometric authentication in their home state. Taxpayers should take note of this improvement and use the updated procedure for a smooth GST registration.
