Unified Tax Year 2026 Update

One Period, One Name: Embracing the Unified 'Tax Year'

Reform Spotlight: Income Tax Act 2025

The Income Tax Act, 2025 is set to revolutionize India's direct tax landscape. By retiring the dual terminology of "Previous Year" and "Assessment Year," the government is introducing a singular "Tax Year" to make compliance intuitive and direct.

The New Logic: In the outgoing system, income earned in a Financial Year (FY) was evaluated in a separate Assessment Year (AY). Starting April 1, 2026, income earned is recorded and filed for the same Tax Year.

Key Pillars of the Change

Standardization: A 12-month cycle from April 1 to March 31, aligning with the financial year.
Terminology: Confusing AY/FY labels are replaced with a single, intuitive "Tax Year" identifier.
Transition: Income up to March 31, 2026, stays under the 1961 Act. New income from April 1, 2026, moves to the 2025 Act.
