PAN 2.0: The 2026 Evolution

A Comprehensive Guide to India's Modernized Permanent Account Number System

Starting April 1, 2026, India is updating how it handles Permanent Account Numbers (PAN). This shift moves away from the old rules set in 1961 and introduces a more modern, secure system.

1. Enhanced DOB Verification

In the past, you could get a PAN quickly using only your ID card. The Change: That specific identification is no longer enough on its own for birth verification.

Accepted Proofs of Birth:
  • Birth Certificate
  • 10th-grade Mark Sheet
  • Passport
  • Voter ID
  • Driving License

2. Strict Data Alignment

The government is enforcing absolute data matching to prevent duplicate or fraudulent identities. Your name, gender, and birthday on the PAN application must be identical to your linked identification records.

Note: No nicknames or "preferred names" are allowed. The name will be pulled directly from official records, including specific spellings and initials.

3. New Application Forms

The legacy Form 49A has been retired. Please use the appropriate form from the new series:

Form ID Target Applicant
Form 93Individual Indian Citizens
Form 94Indian Businesses and Groups
Form 95Foreigners or people living abroad
Form 96Foreign Companies
CR-01/02Corrections and Updates

4. Mandatory PAN Usage Limits

New thresholds for high-value transactions effective 2026:

Transaction Type New 2026 Threshold
Real Estate (Buying a Home)Required for deals over ₹20 Lakh
Banking (Cash Deposits/Withdrawals)Required if over ₹10 Lakh per year
Vehicles (Cars/Scooters/Bikes)Required for all vehicles over ₹5 Lakh

Insurance PoliciesRequired for EVERY policy

5. Structural Updates

  • Single Parents: Applicants raised by a single mother are no longer required to list a father's name.
  • Minors: Representative adults must provide their own ID and an Indian address when applying for a child.
  • Existing Cards: Your current card remains valid unless you need to update information.

PAN 2.0 Features

New cards are crafted from durable PVC plastic and feature a QR code for instant authenticity verification. Security is the core of the new 2.0 standard.
