How To Reactivate Your PAN: CBDT Deactivates 11.5 Crore PAN Cards for Failing to Link with Aadhaar

Approximately 11.5 crore PAN cards were deactivated for failing to meet the Aadhaar linkage deadline, as revealed in an RTI response from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The deadline for linking PAN cards with Aadhaar concluded on June 30 of this year.

Out of the 70.24 crore PAN card holders nationwide, 57.25 crore individuals successfully linked their PAN cards with Aadhaar. As per the RTI reply, more than 12 crore PAN cards remain unlinked to Aadhaar, leading to the deactivation of 11.5 crore of these cards.

If you missed the Aadhaar link deadline and your PAN has become inactive, you can reactivate it by providing your Aadhaar details to the Income Tax (I-T) department. If you fail to link PAN-Aadhaar by the deadline, you may be subject to a fee, with a maximum of Rs. 1,000, according to the I-T department.

Here's what you need to do if your PAN is deactivated:

1. Write a letter to your jurisdictional Assessing Officer (AO) in the Income Tax Department, requesting the reactivation of your PAN.

2. Attach the following documents to the letter for PAN reactivation:

   - Copy of PAN for which you regularly file the Income Tax Return.

   - Copy of the last three years' Income Tax Returns filed on the deactivated PAN.

3. After submitting the letter to the I-T department, it typically takes 10-15 days for the Income Tax Department to reactivate your PAN.

Results of a non-functional PAN:

If taxpayers do not furnish the necessary Aadhaar information, their PAN will become non-functional. During this inactive period, the following outcomes will occur:

1. No refunds will be processed for transactions linked to these PANs.

2. Interest will not accrue on any refunds during the period of PAN inactivity.

3. TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) and TCS (Tax Collected at Source) will be deducted or collected at an elevated rate as specified in the Act.
