CBDT: The Central Board of Direct Taxes CBDT has already started the process of issuing tax refunds to taxpayers. For the financial year 2022-23, 60% of taxpayers have been issued with tax refunds. However, the transfer of tax refund takes time and varies depending on various factors. 

The income tax department analyses the application properly before issuing tax refunds to the taxpayers. They first check whether the refund amount is more or less than the actual amount of tax liability. 

After completing such essential checks, the tax department sends an intimation notice to the taxpayers stating the refund amount including the due time.

It is important to remember that in order to receive your tax refund, you need to pre-validate your bank accounts and PAN the number on the new income tax portal. This step is also helpful if you haven't received your refund yet.

Incomplete Bank Account Details: Accurate and complete bank account information is crucial for swift refunds. Make sure your bank account is pre-validated to avoid delays caused by discrepancies. 

Verification Process: After filing your income tax returns, it's essential to verify them. The e-verification must be completed within 30 days of filing the returns. 

Various other factors can also lead to refund delays. If the issue persists, consulting a tax professional or a chartered accountant is advisable.

What to do when the income tax return is delayed?

If you are one of those who have yet to wait for the income tax returns but do not know what to do! Below are the steps that you must adhere to. 

  1. The first step that you have to do is “Go to the e-filing portal at https://www.incometax.gov.in/iec/foportal/ 
  2. There you must click on the 'Income Tax Return (ITR) Status' on the page. 
  3. Next, log in to your account with your credentials. 
  4. After this,  you will get an OTP on your registered Mobile number or email ID. Enter the OTP and click on 'Continue'. 
  5. Lastly, your tax refund status will be displayed on the screen.

Monitoring the status of your income tax refund and staying attentive to any communication from the I-T department is crucial.
