UPI Tax Payment Limit 2026: How to Pay Income Tax Above ₹1 Lakh
The digital payment landscape in India has undergone a massive shift. As of 2026, the days of being restricted by a ₹1 lakh cap for tax payments are over. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has specifically increased the UPI transaction limit for tax payments to ₹5 lakh, making it the most convenient way to settle dues with the Income Tax Department.
The New Reality: UPI for High-Value Tax Payments
While standard UPI transfers (like sending money to a friend) are usually capped at ₹1 lakh per day, the "Government/Tax" category is now classified as a "Verified High-Value Merchant" sector.
- Maximum Limit: ₹5,00,000 per transaction.
- Availability: 24/7, including bank holidays.
- Confirmation: Instant generation of the Challan Receipt (CRN).
Step-by-Step Guide to Paying Above ₹1 Lakh
Paying high-value tax via UPI is done through the official e-Filing portal. Follow these steps to ensure your transaction doesn't get declined:
- Login: Go to the Income Tax e-Filing Portal and log in with your credentials.
- e-Pay Tax: Go to e-File > e-Pay Tax and click on 'New Payment'.
- Select Assessment Year: Choose the correct Year (e.g., AY 2026-27) and the type of tax (Self-Assessment Tax or Advance Tax).
- Payment Mode: On the payment screen, do not select 'Net Banking'. Instead, click on 'Payment Gateway'.
- Choose a Bank Gateway: Select any bank (e.g., Federal Bank, Kotak Mahindra, or SBI). These banks act as a bridge to allow UPI payments.
- Select UPI: Once you are on the bank's gateway page, choose UPI as the payment method.
- Scan & Pay: You will see a QR code or an option to enter your UPI ID (VPA).
- Open your app (GPay, PhonePe, BHIM).
- Scan the code.
- The app will automatically recognize this as a Government Payment and allow the amount (up to ₹5 lakh) to proceed.
- Download Receipt: Once the "Paid" screen appears, wait to be redirected to the IT portal to download your Challan receipt.
Real-Life Example: Paying ₹3.5 Lakh in Tax
The Scenario: Arjun is a freelance software architect. For the financial year, his calculated tax liability is ₹3,50,000. Previously, he would have had to use Net Banking or visit a bank for a physical cheque.
The 2026 UPI Process:
- Arjun logs into the IT portal and generates a challan for ₹3,50,000.
- He selects the Canara Bank Payment Gateway and chooses UPI.
- He enters his UPI ID in the portal.
- He receives a notification on his PhonePe app for ₹3,50,000.
- Even though Arjun’s usual daily limit is ₹1 lakh, PhonePe allows this transaction because it is tagged as a Tax Payment.
- He enters his UPI PIN, the payment is successful, and he gets his receipt in 30 seconds.
